Tivo has announced new features for Tivo Series 3 and Tivo HD owners, including external storage capability, streaming downloads as well as multi-room viewing.
Multi Room Viewing – This feature allows users to stream their recorded content from one Tivo device to another, allowing for example a recorded movie on a living room Tivo to be shown in a bedroom Tivo. The Multi-Room Viewing feature (MRV) is somewhat backwards compatible as it allows a series 3 Tivo to stream recordings to a series 2 model as well, however you cannot stream a series 2 recording to a series 3, nor can you stream HD content to a non-HD model.
TivoToGo – The popular TivoToGo feature is now enabled in the series 3 models as well as the Tivo HD, allowing recordings to be sent over IP to a computer, where it can be viewed using the Tivo Desktop Plus or burned to a DVD.
External Storage – Tivo, in a joint venture with Western Digital has released an external eSATA storage device dubbed the “My DVR Expander” and connects to the Tivo Series 3 and Tivo HD’s eSATA port. The external device includes 500GB of external storage, allowing those with huge libraries of recordings to retain them, rather that delete them to make room for more. The device would allow up to 300 hours of Standard definitions or up to 60 hours of high definition recordings with a MSRP of $199.99.
Progressive Downloads – This new feature will allow users to buffer downloaded content and begin watching downloads from TivoCast or Amazon Unbox before the download is complete. This feature of course of dependent on a high speed Internet connection.
