I read in the HD-DVR manual that a phone line was required and I just gave up my land line when stand alone dsl became available in Chicago. Why do I have to have a phone line? I called and they assured me I had to have it but couldn't tell me exactly why. They said to complete the downloads and for some features but didn't know what the features were. I do have an Ethernet hookup to my dsl but she didn't think that was operational. Any ideas?
Thanks,

You Don't need a phone line. If you have a directv hr20 or hr21 the phone line is not needed. They are not TIVO units so they get the guide from the sat. not from the phone line. You may not be able to order pay per views with the remote with out the phone line. The good news is that with the next software update your dvr will be able to use the Ethernet connection to communicate back to directv. you will then be able to order pay per views again with your remote.
