Sorry, new guy question, but rather than "buying" a hd dvr from directv and pay the monthly lease fee, if I buy one off of ebay, will it work without me having to notify or alert directv in some way thus causing me to pay them the monthly fee? Any information regarding this would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

i dont think you can out right buy a dvr from ebay or dtv .. you just buy the right to use it ... you will have to let dtv know you have it or it will be useless... they have to know which box # you have & know the card # as well ...then they will send authorization codes to it via satellite to turn it on in there system ..

Dont buy ANY of the Directv recievers off ebay!!!! Most of those units are units that were leased to others who have breached their lease agreements with DTV. Ebay has a page that will tell you about this as well. If you wish to buy rather than lease a dvr or reciever call DTV directly and tell them the catch is they will double charge you for the equipment. I was told via email when I also asked them this question a hdtv dvr would cost $499. Dont get yourself into traps getting the equipment thru ebay.
