500? Last time I checked, DVD Recorders were going for about 10 times that =( This September, Panasonic supposedly put one on the market for a list price of $3,999 and recordable discs will sell for $34.99-$44.99. Sorta expensive, if you ask me. You may try doing some searches with major search engines or online stores to see if you can find cheaper prices (Pricewatch etc), though DVD Recorders aren't cheap...

Check out the December issue of Sound & Vision, they give a review of the Panasonic that Ariok is talking about as well as a peek at the Pioneer model that will sell for around $2500.00. Since good players that offer Digital and DTS decoding or progressive scanning are just now falling below the $500 mark I think it will be a long time before we see a DVD Recorder that is affordable to the general masses.

There are two competing DVD recording devices DVD ram and DVD-RW.DVD-RW's aren't avaible yet.DVD-RW's will be compatible with existing DVD players, but the DVD ram will need special hardware. You won't be able to burn a DVD and play it in todays DVD players. You may want to wait till the smoke settles, remember VCR vs Betamax.
Real-time recording and immediate playback demoed at CeBIT.
February 29, 2000
Last Friday in Hannover, Germany, at the annual CeBIT technology show, a conglomeration of the major electronics manufacturers successfully demoed the recording and playback capability of a DVD-RW device.
The device in question was a Ricoh prototype DVD-RW recorder, and the demonstration consisted of video and audio being recorded in real time to a 4.7GB DVD-RW disc, and that disc then being removed and put into several different regular DVD players and played back immediately, to show the cross-compatibility of the recorded disc.
That's good news, folks-- it means we're much closer to DVD completely supplanting the antiquated VHS format. No word yet on what a DVD-RW player, or its media, will cost, but if the rest of the DVD format is any indication, it will start somewhat high and quickly plummet.
