I would like to know if StarChoice has a better IRD than
the Expressview 4700. The 4700 has a rather ugly channel
guide with no Picture/audio surfing like the d** rca420 and
newer Sonys. I have d** sony b2 but would like local cdn
stuff via sat rather than cable.

Star Choice has a Dolby Digital receiver called the Navigo 401 made by General Instruments and UHF upgradable . Without UHF it sells for 199 at the present time with a 100.00 program credit . Canadian money .

Yes, the General Instrument receiver is a better machine (manufactured quality-wise) than the Echostar box that Ex-vu uses.
In late january/february, Anik F1 will go hot which will mean starchoice will have a far greater channel capacity than ex-vu.

That is called a " short term advantage for Bell " . Star Choice is using an old satellite that will be replaced in February and another one coming along called "F2" a year later , both in key orbital slots that will blow Bell away because of BANDWIDTH . Bell has no official plans for multi sat usage and if they are to go that way , no good orbital slot and at least 3 years away for a new one .
The CRTC recently announced approval of 175 new channels and Bell only can handle 35-60 more at this time . Star Choice will carry most of the channels granted , although it won't be near this number announced because of amalgamations and as such . The complete list is available at the CRTC's website . Maybe someone can post the link .
Hey , it's not a wide open DTV system , but it's better than TFC's , for a lot of people .

Hi Guys,
Trust me you don’t really want one because BOTH suck BIGTIME compared to the US systems. Unless you like pokemon, Leave it to Beaver, and the oldest crap, there is not much reason to want one.
I have one for my 7 year old daughter and honestly have watched it about 2 hours in 2 years for our election reports.
Neither ExpressVu or StarChoice could possibly survive if they had to compete with DirecTV®. In fact both are big money losers but Bell ExpressVu only continue so they can try to keep the cable companies out of the phone business, they hope. They are really waiting for 2 way and hope that Internet services may help them survive.
Each has less than 500,000 subs and are growing at a near zero rate now. Bell ExpressVu is being pirated across the country. When Dish has 5,000,000 subs and DirecTV® 10,000,000 the maximum these guys could EVER expect is 10% of that or 1.5 million in all. Subtract 500,000 to 700,000 DirecTV® and Dish systems in the country (with all the problems) and imagine how THIS will grow once we get a Supreme Court ruling saying its lawful to receive International signals. The American systems will quickly double while the Canadian ones will probably half. Due to the CRTC censorship of good American programming (and the population to afford good quality productions), these guys haven’t a chance to survive with the crap they produce. Canada may have a small population, but we know good programming when we see it and we are all aware that its on DirecTV® and not the ----ty Canadian services.
Sorry but that’s just reality and the way it is.

Well it is not to be mistaken with DTV , but , it's not near as bad as TTRK wants us all to believe , but it's "his" opinion , and we all have one .
" I " personally enjoy the hockey news [not available on DTV ] the local channels and news from across the country [ not available on DTV ] and the Canadian slant on some of the other channels . If you want baseball coverage...buy DTV .
On my Star Choice DD receiver , I now enjoy the Dolby Digital sound on The Movie Network . Does DTV have any DD movie channels besides 1 Starz channel and PPV available for their subs ?
It just happened last nite , the DD thing on the Movie Networks . A real bonus for those who like great sound .
I enjoy both my DTV and Star Choice systems . They compliment each other and both offer stuff the other one fails in . I really would not want to lose either one of them or convince others in what to buy or not to buy .
Hey they are only around 100 bucks , try one and find out for "yourself" , it's not the end of the world if you don't like it . They are a long way from the price of a questionable HU card fix of 700-800 Canadian that some are now offering . :)
Thanks Rise for the forum . Hopefully it will grow and those of us who have Canadian can chat here as we all know how our speech is limited on a certain other forum operated by a Canadian dealer .

Well I looked at ExpVu, but decided to get Star Choice after a friend of mine got screwed by ExpVu.
I have DTV & Star Choice. Which I bought for my daughter. I prefer her watching Treehouse and Family channels. Also in my neck of the woods, cable cost me 36 a month for 30 channels (2 of them French, 1 for Local), so I got tired of paying for it and bought the Star Choice.

Apparently Express Vu is now trying to kill Star Choice by denying them access to transponders on F1 . This info is supposed to be available at the CRTC when they return from their holidays in 2001 . Quite a bit of uproar at the mighty white site about it . Many claiming they will go back to black or grey before Bell Express Vu . This could get mighty interesting before it's all over .
I'm surprised the mods over there allowed the Legal-Rights.org url to stay without deleting it .

Well Star Choice has a lease on transponders for x amount of years , but it is not their satellite . It is owned by a different company .

It still amazes me how expresspuke has tried to kill their u.s competition and failed :) and now they try to kill their cdn competition with this crap. Screw em. If you want to watch cdn tv, buy starchoice.

Forget about express vue unless you want to get srewed big time. The customer service is the worst ever. The installer had to be rescheduled 3 times, before I finally cancelled my satellite. They did charge my credit card as soon as I placed my order, but I have to wait 6-8 weeks for a refund.
Heaven help you if you ever need bell customer service.
