If you need to do a normal reboot you can use Power and Down Arrow at the same time. The Power Lite goes off then the HD lite comes on then goes off screen flashes once then you can power back up, If it was successful you will be in the inital setup menu.
If you did the Mod and an upgrade attempt locked it up then you must Unplug the receiver for a Minute or two to reset it.

If we connect another switch across the terminals of the internal reset switch will that work for the update reset?
We could probably mount a tiny momentary switch by drilling a hole in the back of our receiver for a convenient location.
I didnt notice if the reset switch was a "make" or "break" type switch. (normally open or normally closed)
I also mentioned in another thread that Radio Shack carries a 7-in-one remote control which controls its X-10 modules as well as satellite and TVs. One control can do it all, even turn off or on lights in the house - anything connected to modules.

I rember seeing a small pushbutton switch on the main board is this a reset? Have you tested it to see if it reset your
audio settings and other preferances?
I am thinking of using the vpp pulse we disconnected to stop the update to trigger a circuit to do an automatic reset when an update comes down.
This could be a good place to connect the auto reset circuit
Please report your findings on the switch
I am going to be out of town for 7 days I will work on it when I return

As we have discovered, using the power and down arrow does not work for a reset after an upgrade attempt. I dont think the auto reset is feasable because the update comes continuously after its scheduled time for what appears to be at least 10 minutes.
I did connect a reset switch on back of my receiver as described in another thread "BEST WAY TO MOD DTC100" http://www.dsschat.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=42277
I hope you had a good vacation.

another possibility is a cheap timer that turns off the
unit twice a day for 10 minutes or so .... you know
the kind that plug in the wall and have the plastic
things . ...if it is scheduled for 3pm, turn it off at 3pm to 3:30 or so. I don't know how exact the timing is..
ie if its sched for 3pm each day, does it repeat? does the time change? Most folkssay the time is the same each day.
I have seen the things with 24 hours on a dial.i think
you can turn them off for 15 minute intervals.
other people have already said that the unit when turned on returns to the exact place it was.
personally i don't like to have to pick up extra switches, etc. A couch potato is supposed to do everything with
the remote. Too bad the x10 unit cannot get beer ... that is a good idea also.
my unit was hit, but i think i'll hang loose, unless someone figures out a good way to automatically reset, or find some hidden menu like on the other 5th gen units (eg channel 199, left arrow and info on the unit),
