Crazy thing is mine tried to update 3 times then it stopped
for several weeks yesterday I did a soft reboot ( Power & Down Arrow ) and now it has started trying to update again.

I am trying to figure out how to stop it again.

This is the 64 thousand dollar question.

How to make it stop?

There must be an easy way, but I have not found it yet.

What makes it freeze? Is it trying to do a reset when it freezes?

I have not been able to watch it while it's trying, but when I get home, I noticed the power light is off, but the HD light is still on.

After I pull the plug, I hear something inside the case that sounds like a switch resetting.

Do you think there might be a way to "trick" it into thinking it got the upgrade.

Or, how about a way to allow it to reset after the failed update attempt.

Anybody..........

I put an x10 remote outlet switch in the line for my DTC 100. It adds another remote to pile, but makes life easier. You can add other components to the same circuit that must be turned on to make your system run. With the power off at the plug there are no worries of ECM, lightning, etc. With the updates scheduled at around 3:00 pm and 3:00 am your system is not in the loop while you are at work or sleep, so it really doesn't matter. I might add if you run an emulator as I do, this makes start up a no brainer.

As they say "Try it you'll like it".

Kool Aid -

I get the same exact thing. 2 updates every 24-hours (4am and 4pm). After each update my power light is off and HD light on. To reset you have to kill power and wait 10-15 seconds. I hear a relay switch and have to wait an additional 5 seconds then everything works till the next update.

This is getting to be more of a pain everyday. It has now been 4 weeks like this.

Hey finally a reason to get a "Clapper"....

Clap On - Watch TV
Clap Off - Not Updates

I haven’t tried cutting off the power when not in use.

Doesn't this cause everything in you preferences to return to default?

I don't want to have to set up everything each time I put the power to it.

I was thinking more along the lines of a jumper wire going to the reset switch inside the case, or something like that, so it resets itself.

What hwac has suggested is not only the BEST way but also the ONLY way to guarantee against these updates. When you "power off" your IRD (unplug, turn off, beat with a stick), it does not "power off" your backup power supply which is in every IRD. Some last for an hour or two and some last for several hours. When you merely unplug the IRD, you have not effectively removed it from the threat of an update. Because the IRD has reserve power, it is still technically "ON". However, when the coax (RG6, line from dish) is not "connected" to the receiver, the receiver cannot receive the signal, thus eliminating the updates. Aside from "unscrewing" the cable from the back of your IRD or physically knocking your dish "off course", the only way to achieve what it is that you seek is to buy a "toggle switch" from RadioSh!t or another dealer to essentially REMOVE your IRD from the datastream. These switches only cost about $20-40 and will save you far more over the life of testing:) SG

Any backup power supply in the IRD is for the purpose of maintaining the power to a memory chip. There is no way that there is enough residual power to supply the LNB or the receiver circuits for more than a few seconds. An update cannot happen if the IRD is unplugged.

RonR is correct....

The backup power is basically a circuit that is run off a few capacitors to provide power to memory. It can not send power to the LNB therefore no signal/data comes to the IRD.
