Hi,
Anybody know anything about or ever been to Fort Stewart Georgia??? My little bro is in the military (Army) and is doing a tour in Korea... And just found out a few weeks ago that this is where he's headed next... He's half way thru his tour and I think we're both getting homesick or the fact that he didn't get to come home or see any of his family during the holidays!!! If you know of any good links or anything I can tell him about Fort Stewart or the surrounding area I think it will give him something to look forward to (and me too)!!! I'm so glad that after his stay in Georgia he'll have his 20 years in and hopefully will retire?!?! I must have the "After Holiday Blues" but I can't wait for him to come home:(!!!
Thanks

copperhillgirl,
My nephew is there now. I have one suggestion. If you're going to visit, get directions BEFORE you leave home. The locals know NOTHING (One asked, "What part of Ft. Stewart ya' goin' to?"). After a 3 hour detour, we realized we had passed the exit 75 miles earlier! Of course, there's nowhere to turn around and there was no indication something was amiss:) Your brother will have fun. Those guys down there know how to raise hell and have a ball. SG

After having readyour many informative advice posts I didn't want the Savannah message to ge lost in the shuffle and I couldn't remember if I had used my General Forum name or my subscription name. Anyway I hope the info will be of some help. I didn't add that he won't be that far from jacksonville Fla which as you probably know has an NFL franchise. It too is a great town to play in also.
Let me know if I can help further

I grew up in Jacksonville, it's good to see someone else who has something positive to say about the city:) Funny, 20 years ago it was a "blue-collar, factory town". Now (that it has a football team) it's a beautiful city.lol It was beautiful when I lived there too (Julington Creek) but noone else knew it. SG

Thanks you guys for the help and for the pm's that I got ;)... This place (Ft. Stewart) needs some public relation help on-line, not much out there...But I'll keep looking around for more...
spyguy & booseybear,
Little Bro likes to party, hunt & fish... Looks like partying and fishing are in but is there any hunting there??? If so, do you know what???
Spent the night in Jacksonville once about 8 years ago. Maybe we were in a bad area and just didn't know it but I have to say it was a little scary. I can't remember where exactly we were. We don't know the town so we had to have followed signs, there were alot of hotels in a row and they were on the beach (looked like tourist row to me???)... We got there late and left early but in that short time they found a dead homeless man on the beach, a prostitute dead in a shopping cart just up the street, an abandoned baby, a house burnt about a block away that was determined to be arson and security walked all night back and forth past the front and back or our hotel room. I'm sure we weren't there more than 6-8 hours... My ex-boss/neighbor is getting ready to go there soon for a job interview, so I hope that night was just a fluke or things have gotten better!!! Surely it was just a bad night, you both sound like you like it...

That area is a good deer hunting area. I live North of there and it is a part of my Sales Territory. The Savannah/Jacksonville connection should provide him with a number of diversions. i hope he likes crabs (the eating kind).......This area has a number of great eating areas for them. Can't say too much about Stewart......typical army area. The Navy keeps some nuke subs on the Fla/Ga line at Kings Bay. The area can be fun if he is open to trying some new things....
In fact I'll be heading down that way next week on a Sales trip.
Let me know if i can help further

There is also a Greyhound Racing Track in Jacksonville if he likes to gamble.

Now things are looking up for him, deer hunting and gambling... On top of partying & seafood (which I figured went with the area and being around a military base) If there's loose women and or nude beaches and some place to get home-cooked meals he may never come home!!! :US
Thanks you guys I'm passing all of these posts on to him in Korea and he's enjoying them!!! :D

The experience you've described indicates to me that you were at Jacksonville Beach. That area is pretty rundown compared to a few miles North or South and it's pretty rough (I lived there when I moved from my Dad's, my rent was $285 for a one bedroom a mere 2 blocks from the beach...kinda let's you know the "area" when 2 miles North there are million dollar homes.) After 15 years in Jax, I never found a nude beach but I prefer to surf anyway:) There are 2 dog tracks in/near Jacksonville (race track road off state road 17 and Orange Park off of highway 295 "nice area"). Fernandina Beach (north of Jax about 60-70 miles has a shrimp festival every year and it makes Forest Gump's buddy Bubba look like an amature.lol) In downtown Jax there is "the landing/river walk" which has a number of shops, live entertainment, Hooters, and Fat Tuesdays (they specialize in frozen island drinks and all of the college girls hang out there). The best public beach is Atlantic Beach (just south of Jax. beach on A1A) and things usually start "kickin'" in April/May. On the way out to the beach (Atlantic Blvd.), there are 2 restaurants/bars on opposite sides of the street on the East side of the Intra Coastal Waterway. They have fresh seafood daily, drink specials, live music on the weekends, and a realatively relaxed atmosphere. As I said, I love/d Jacksonville:) He'll have a blast, SG

Tell him to check out River Street in Savannah when it warms up. Great place to party and they have arts and crafts, seafood fests, and more. Its right on the river. Been there several times and loved it.

Hey he could go to the race track and hunt the greyhounds. They are quite fast and I hear they destroy them after a year anyways, which is quite disgusting IMHO.

InRBigness,
I've never seen the dog races, now I guess I never will!!! This is off the subject but why would they do that??? Why wouldn't they use the dogs for breeding purposes??? That's Terrible!!!:(

Another note on racing...if the dog racing isn't exciting enough tell him there is a dirt track there. We used to race late models there a few years ago for a special right after speedweeks. We always got rained out but that is what made the track so much fun!!! We stayed at a hotel by the airport and the bar at the Holiday Inn (if I'm remembering correctly) is a blast. Gees, I sure miss the dirt days.

Been stationed at both, Jax is the armpit of the world, how a bunch of country ----s got a football team is beyond me, beaches are filthy and if you have to go anywhere, you get stuck on a bridge. Other than that the only good thing about that place was LEX and TERRY on the radio. FT STEW great place, river street has the best micro brews around, pretty laid back but tell your bro to beware of the cops around that area.

It's good to know fellow shipmates are out there,I'm about 5 miles from the dog track in Jax.As far as Hinesville Ga I lived there for about 3 yrs. It was alright back in the early 80's. The only thing is you are out there that can be good or not.I lived on Canal St off Hwy 82 just on the edge of town.Good luck with the move and all.
