I can't begin to express how wronged I feel with this whole Sat. Issue. I live 10 Min from the US Boarder. I receive ALL the local US stations and yet I can not view what I want or choose the sat TV of my choice. What’s next I can not view Movies due to no Canadian Content. We as Canada do we not see what we are doing is wrong. We are so stressed as to what IS CANADIAN that we are losing our fundamental rights. I look at Hockey Teams moving to the US because of Taxes. Yet with a Star Choice system I can’t even watch a Hockey game. The station is blocked is commonly heard. I wish we were in a free country. Free to speak our minds free to choose what we want to watch. What I see now is Police for big Business interests and rules that apply to some but not all. I see our country that once had made speeches about our freedom and who we will never change or take away that. Yet it appears its freedom but only if you do Canadian things, watch Canadian Content, listen to Canadian radio. I live in Canada I work in Canada and I pay Taxes in Canada and I will be damned if I am told how to spend my time and my money and what to watch.
Freedom to all but only if you do as we say.

Having just registered myself, I feel the same way you do about this sat. business. After seeing gs2, ttrk and some other views and facts I didnt realize it was as bad as this. Our basic rights in this country seem to be twindling slowly away.
I think what the RCMP, CRTC and Bev are trying to do is outright wrong and has to be stopped so we can exercise our freedoms to watch what the hell we want.

Hi Coop and Sherman,
You fellows are just becoming familiar with how undemocratic our country has become under the Liberals and is no longer the Canada we once knew.
I think that is important to KNOW where to place the blame for this however. Yes BEV is a company who are used to operating under a government monoply as Bell Canada and as we have the finest politicians that MONEY CAN BUY in Canada, I am sure Bev and Bell are well aware of that fact. And they probably take advantage of all the realities that exist without any care as to what rights that may remove from Canadians. And its pretty outrageous that we have a "censor board" in the CRTC. Who, in the year 2000, needs some pompas government beaureaucrat deciding what TV Canadians can watch.
But make no mistake, the "Video Police" RCMP and Industry Canada all operate under the auspices of the LIBERAL GOVERNMENT and their TOTAL DISREGARD for the people of this country. Their interpretation of a CLEAR LAW is 100% WRONG and judges such as the Honourable Mr. Justice Brenner have stated so in their rulings, one as recently as December 10, 1999. Have a look at the ruling at
http://www.legal-rights.org/canam.html
and you will see where the judge CLEARLY states that the government is WRONG.
The LIBERALS are the ones to bleme here, and its important for us to let people know that.
And its even MORE important that we dont forget that at election time. No amount of speculation as to how some other government would rule the country stands up against the PROVEN DISREGARD FOR CANADIANS of the current LIBERAL GOVERNMENT and their COSY relationship with large corporations who donate LARGE SUMS to the LIBERALS.
They MUST go.
Thanks,
To the REAL King!!

I don’t know what I can do. I want to help but I am not sure who really cares. It really makes me think though if they are this corrupt over the TV we watch what is being done on the big issues. I don’t like being made to think I am a bad Canadian because I want my Dave TV. I haven’t used a Test card as of yet but now I am going to start. I have sent a few emails to people higher up, but I am sure they are never read. What can the average person do to help? I have signed an On-line petition wrote some emails what else can be done?

To restrict the Free flow of information in a country like Canada is very sad..
Whats even more sad is why.. for the selfish financial interests of Gigantic Canadian Corps..
Even more sad is the number one priority of the Royal Farcets is to destroy companies offerring Choice of TV broadcast.. its in the National Security interest of Canada..
Real crime is not important... there isn't enough funds..
They can NEVER kill a demand for information.. news.. sports.. educational.. entertainment.. foreign language programming...
Imagine you can only watch Wayne Kretzy on CBC.. not ESPN .. or Fox sports is NOT allowed.
How ridculas does that sound...
Industry Canada... Royal Puppetts.. Bell Puke.. Star Jerks..
You are ALL PATHEIC MORONIC IDIOTS...

Well, you know, I cant understand why the CRTC never allowed Power Directv to utilize their services in Canada in the first place?
Yes they gave them a licence but the retrictions placed on them were crazy. When you think of all taxes they could have collected just on programming is awesome. From what I read on the subject it looks like Power bent over backwards to accomodate the CTRC regulations. We could have had the best of both worlds, with all Canadian and American programming at our disposal
Moreover, an underground market would never have come about if this had taken place.
TTRK. you are quite right, this Liberal gov, must not be given another mandate.

Sherman,
You are absolutley right sir, PowerDirect did bend over backward to do everything possible to meet the regulations. And when they did, the Government (via the CRTC old boys club) simply put MORE roadblocks in their way.
If you REALLY want to know what happened (and a VERY good account of Broadcasting in Canada) and you REALLY want to get MAD, read the FABULOUS BOOK called " FREE_FOR_ALL" by Matthew Fraser. It cuts through the BULL and gets to the heart of the issues and tells an inside story of what really happened in Canada. ISBN 0-7737-3165-2
It shows the CRTC to be a protectionist and economic "Old Boys Club" with complete control in the hands of a very few government approved wheelers & dealers. And many of the relationships are incestuous with ex-chairmen of the CRTC STILL in the industry USING the economic rights they put in place for themselves and their buddies.
Coop,
Never give up. You are doing the right things, just add that you need to work as hard as you can to THROW OUT these UNDEMOCRATIC Liberals that will RUIN our country, given time in office. ANY alternative party HAS to be better than one that is PROVEN to have REMOVED DEMOCRACY in what we watch and will CONTINUE to add ways of making us SUBSERVIANT over time. They are POISON and they MUST GO, get DUMPED and that is an overriding concern for thinking Canadians.
Remember the GST they were so against that they were going to cancel!!!

TTRK:
Thanks for the info. I will try to find that book. Seems to me he had an article not to long ago on that very subject in a newpaper editorial.
I often wondered what the Americans think of all this foolishness we have to go thru just to get decent tv. You know if the shoe were on the other foot, I don't think they would stand for it, do you?
By the way, check your e-mail

Americans have had and do have their own problems when it comes to preserving personal freedoms. Our problems (I am from the US), like yours, are solved by citizens who recognize that there is a process for change in the system and exercise it to the best of their abilities.
Through legal challenges and grassroots efforts for political change, corrupt actions can be stopped and your personal freedoms preserved and even expanded.
I admire the efforts of TTRK, Gunsmoke2, you and other concerned citizens who speak out against unfair government practices. A system unchecked by citizen involvement will ALWAYS result in governmental corruption and reductions in freedom.
So good luck to you in your efforts.

Actually the Reform critic has put some questions forward..
Example: how can you collect duties and taxes at the border and they come and take away saying its illegal.. Ottawa are partners in crime..
Something to that effect..
And why is the RCMP making it a number one priority to go after TV people.. when they complain they don't have enough funds to fight organized crime..
Something to that effect..
It all adds up to Political CORRUPTION.

Has anyone ever posed the question to any of the party members in a public form about how they feel in respects to the Canadian right to view the programming they chose? Or how about if they think the RCMP is acting in the best Interest of the country or is it more in the best interest of Big Corporations. I would love to see this sort of question posed to them and see their answer. It’s one of our basic fundamental rights to select what we do. I would love to see their face on LIVE TV when a question like this is asked. A good follow up question would be if we are no longer allowed to select what TV we watch will you soon be selecting what movies we can watch in a theater. I know how about a country dress Code!!
I don’t know maybe I am off on this but just finally seeing how things are done I getting really p’ed off
