Never done this before but in should work. Like cellular said, as long as theres no tint or lead based glass. Man I must say though that would make one hell of a table lamp!

You can definetly go through glass for a signal, however there will be significant signal loss.

Well I found a little extra time today so I tried to get a signal through glass and I in fact did get a signal. The kicker is that I could only get a signal of a 55 with some transponders being as low as 38. I then opened the window and the signal rose to 85. The glass that I tried to point through was by no means the best glass for signal strength(dual pane) but I was amazed that it was doable. Sometimes you just cant believe it truely till you do it yourself.

Unfortunately will lose the signal very easily.

Used to get around 45 signal.. just bearly on the threashold..

Never experimented with a larger dish.. wonder about signal improvements.?

Hey, what happen to the telecommunications
act of 1996?? i thought that places like
condos and town houses could no longer
prevent you from installing a 18" sat
dish? I had the same problem a few years
ago. i lived in an area the had community
rules preventing outside antenna's and
sat dishs. i installed a dish anyway and
had a battle with the community group.
to make a long story short, the 1996
law makes it illegal for a community
to ban 18" sat dishs. they cant do anything
about it if you did installed it anyway.

i took it one step further, since the dish
was ok for me to install but not regular
antennas. i installed another dish and
converted it to a ham antenna.. Looks
almost identical.. would take a very close
inspection by someone knowing what they
were looking at to tell.

One other option, though i really dont
like to bring it up. is if you want a
valid sub, ive heard that dss will come
to bat for you over these type of problems.
If anyone would know the scope on this,
they would!!

Hi PrivateGuy,

Certainly why not? If you have a large glass from floor to ceiling.

It might look ugly.. but I wouldn't care if it brought in a good signal..

My parents have a condo in Florida that has floor to ceiling glass on all sides.

They don't know this.. but if I visit for an extended period of time.. there might be a big ugly dish in their condo.. :)

radioman,

You're right. You can't be banned from installing a dish except on where you locate the dish, the damage doing so will cause the property and such along those lines.

Another alternative to the INSIDE SOLUTION, is a custom setup we've built for a few people. It's simply 2 pieces of nylon strap (Or other belt like material) that you can hang out your window. This is screwed down to a 2 x 4 then you mount your dish to the 2 x 4.

I haven't personally seen any items like this being mass marketed but it's so inexpensive perhaps someone could do so... don't forget to send my 10% royalties :p

You can apply something that's easily removed to keep the 2 x 4 from moving in the winter storms. I've used siding clips and even velcro to accomplish this. I'm sure you can come up with some good ideas as well.

There are flat panel dishes designed for these applications.

Estically there are very nice.. perhaps they might consider one of these.. they don't even look like a dish.. the LNB is built into the flat panel.

OK; Two things guys, Have done this, if you have a problem thru glass, go to a place. they call a hardware store. Get pleXeglass to fit. Da.

Next all you folks sittin' on the patio lookin south over the pool, can take you a nice little 10 gallon planter, put a post in and 80lbs of creet. Mount and point! Then you can go to the craft shop, get you some fancy leaves and berrys {what ever!} Make a damn ficus tree! Who cares.

Next, for those that want to hide, you can shoot thru the air louvers in the attic if
you can aim close to target. But you need to replace any metal louvers with the new plastic ones from HomeD or Lowes, etal.

Now is every one getting my drift?

Besides hackers you may have to carpenters
and crafts men, in some situations.

That is truly an exceptional setup. I don't know if I would jump thru all those hoops when you have a right to put up a dish outside.

I don't know which product gs2 was referencing but a company called satcom electronics used to make a flat panel "dish" targeted for apartments, rv's, etc.

I've checked the dish through window before and noticed significant signal degradation. Something to keep in mind I would think would be that 58 instead of 88 maybe okay signal but when it rains.... the rain will degrade the signal worse, as the rain "plane" will not be the same as the reflector plane and you may easily loose signal completely during even minor rain. (?)... You may need to use a window that won't get wet when it rains.

(Better put that ol c-band dish on the coffee table....)

You could open the window when it rains. JUST KIDDING, JUST KIDDING!

You would lose the signal gain due to the dish, the LNB would see more than 1 satellite. All bad things. Won't work

That flat panel looks good though. Wonder if you can paint it..?
