Ok, this has been a bad day for us and our son. He was diagnosed with RSV after 3 weeks of seeing doctors in his pediatric group. For those of you who don't have kids, or don't know, this is serious. It can also cause him to be asthmatic later in life. My problem is, we have been going to our pediatric group for 3 weeks with the same symptoms, just worse each time, and each time we get a different diagnosis, a prescription and a smile & off you go... It's like a shade tree mechanic... oh we'll fix a part this week, if that doesn't do it, bring it back next week and we'll throw something else at it. This is our only child, and we tried a long time to have him, so we are very concerned about him. He is only 4 months old... But what I want to hear from you guys out there, is this somthing that is common, or do we just have a bad pediatric group? I want to think that this is an isolated case of total misdiagnosis week after week, but I highly doubt it is.

I never heard of RSV, but if you still have doubts I would take him to a childrens hospital or to another doctor.
Good Luck and I'll say a prayer for the three of you.

I have kids...but have I not heard of this. If any doubts exist with you...get another opinion from another ped group. Sorry, I know this does not answer your question.

Terminal_Kase,
I have to say I had never heard of it either but after checking out a few sights I doesn't sound like it's that uncommon??? And with the age of your child I guess it might be hard to diagnose since he can't tell them whats wrong and what hurts... But I don't blame you I'd take him anywhere and everywhere until I was completely comfortable with his diagnosis and with the doctors... Good luck and I'll say a prayer for him...

Here's a sight that I read about it at, but you may have already been there???

I'm sorry you and your family are having to go through that. I, too, have not heard of it before, and like the others, from reading your post, it sounds like you would be most comforted by taking your son to see a different doctor from an unrelated group. I'm not a doctor, but i do know that it soemtimes takes a while to correctly diagnose a problem and thereby provide an effective treatment. At other times, even some of the best doctors fail to correctly identify the true nature of a problem. The bottom line is, it is ALWAYS best to get a second opinion when in doubt. Your current doctors understand this and will not be offended if you do.

Thanks for the replies folks. I am in the middle of a hard search for a new pediatric group for our son. The virus is rather common, but the problem does lie with his age and the virus... I wish mom could have sustained the breastfeeding, but unfortunately she dried up... We got 3 good weeks out of them before we had no choice but to switch to formula because she just couldn't produce enough to satisfy the little man. The fun part now is the medicine that he is on is hyping him up and making him irritable... that was only supposed to happen in toddlers... but guess what. Just adds to the stress when the little fellow feels bad & you have to give him something that makes him feel worse... but hopefully it will make him better in the long run.

Thanks
