3 guys walk into a hotel and ask the clerck at the front desk for a room to share.

"No problem, it's 30 dollars." says the clerk.

The 3 guys split the cost each paying 10 dollars a piece.
A few minutes later the clerk realizes he overcharged the guys 5 dollars, and sent the bellboy up with the change.

On the way up the clerk thinks to himself "5 dollars can't be split evenly between 3 guys so, I'll keep 2 dollars for myself and give them 3 dollars back."
The bellboy then gives them 3 dollars back and keeps 2 dollars for a tip for himself.

The guys only ended up paying 27 dollars for their room, (9 dollars a piece not 10)plus the two dollar tip for the bellboy equals 29.

Where did the extra dollar go????

knowing this is a joke that makes you wonder I still have the answer $30 right, they give them $5 back right.Actually they paid $25 for the room give the $2 to the boy and the $3 they got back,in that case 25+2=27+3=30,so there is the dollar, but the real question is why is it really $28 when you add 3 + 25 but the other way it is $27 and how was $28 split between 3 people

Back in college I worked in a hotel nights and I am the actual bellboy in this story. The truth is I kept the whole 5 dollars and I made up this puzzle to keep the clerk's mind occupied. I put the five in my wallet and what with compound interest it's now a twenty.

The extra dollar went no where. When you go 27(for room) plus 2 dollars (for the tip) to eqaul 29 you are doing math wrong. The 2 dollars have already been added in to the equation. They were only supposed to pay 25 for the room, but they payed 27 because the bellboy kept a tip. Therefore, the trick is that it's "funny" math. (Like saying you have 11 fingers....10, 9, 8, 7,6 + five on the other hand equals 11) As for the 28.....it's the same thing!

actually the 3 guys were staying in a room next to a couple who where there for vacation and the couple heard their remarks about the bell boy shorting them a dollar and they thought to theirself well we also give the bell boy $30 and he came back and gave us $2 back (since the rooms were only $25 the bell boy kept $3 this time). They were running low on money so the couple each came up with $15 a piece when they paid for the room. When the bell boy give them the $2 back they had only paid $14 each for the room .Which makes this $28 the bell boy kept $3 for a tip which makes $31 instead of $30, so realizing this the couple ran to the guys room saying the bell boy had an extra dollar b/c they only paid $30 and when they added it up it came up to be $31.So,they talked it over and all decided to call room service for a bottle of wine. The bell boy brought the wine and the 5 people held him down took the $5 he had kept for his self they then split it and they all got another dollar back,so all were happy and the bell boy learned not to keep change that he was not supposed to keep.>>>>I just thought this story needed a good ending.lol
