To The Real King!!

Hi Everyone,
Here is some interesting published info on DTV's operations. Its costs them $535.00 per subscriber to acquire new customers. WOW!!!
I think their costs may well go up this quarter if the number of receivers in Wal-Marts trash bins is any measure.
Hughes Electronics' DirecTV unit reported
subscriber numbers for the first quarter,
along with overall results for the satellite
business giant.
DirecTV added 840,000 gross subscribers
during the quarter, Hughes said. After
accounting for churn, net subscriber additions
for the quarter amounted to 340,000. As of
March 31, DirecTV had more than 9.8 million
subscribers, representing an 18 percent
increase over the 8.3 million customers
attained as of March 31, 2000.
Hughes executives, including Senior Executive
Vice President of Hughes' Consumer Sector
Eddy Hartenstein, said DirecTV should obtain
between 1.5 million and 1.7 million customers
this year. Churn should remain within 1.5
percent to 1.7 percent, they said.
To keep churn within expectations, DirecTV
will unveil a number of subscriber retention
initiatives. They include a new lease program,
details of which will be released closer
to its launch in June.
DirecTV generated more than $1.3 billion in
revenues for the quarter, an increase of 25
percent when compared to $1.059 billion
reported in first quarter 2000, and $50 million
in EBITDA, a 61 percent improvement when
compared to the same period last year.
The subscriber acquisition cost (SAC)
for DirecTV during the quarter amounted to $535.
Hughes reported a first quarter 2001 net
loss of $105.3 million, compared to a net
loss of $81.9 million for the same period
in 2000. First quarter 2001 revenues increased
11.2 percent to $1.893 billion, compared with
$1.703 billion for first quarter 2000.
As far as ongoing speculation about Hughes'
future, and whether it will be sold to News
Corp. or spun out by parent General Motors,
executives wouldn't elaborate beyond a statement
that the company continues to evaluate its
options.
