I'm trying to decide how much I should be paying for getting
a virgin hu programmed . guy #1 charges $100 and will fix
for 3 months free then $30 for any followup repairs (says he has commercial software) guy #2 charges $25 and no promises.
(guy #1 says guy#2 is programming freeware and stay away from it) what are the pitfalls of choosing the freeware over
commercial and is the comm. all it's cracked up to be

With freeware no there is no guarantees but it is cheaper. With a commercial dealer it is more expensive but there is more support. Some dealers will also call customers and forwarn them of ECM's a bit before they happen, most do get emails from the people they purchased from a bit in advance. As well they also get new scripts continuously where as freeware there is no guarantees that there will be new programs released. I have friends that have gone through freeware dealers and after they have your $ there is NOTHING! I also have friends who do this "commercially" and they are much more concerned about helping you as much as possible (after all if they don't help you how can they keep you coming back).

In the end the decision is up to you but, you also get what you pay for.

Good Luck!
