Hi there,

I've done plenty of reading today on various sites about whether or not it is legal to set up DirecTV in Ontario Canada. It seems to be a grey area, even though courts have ruled that because DirectTV is not a lawful provider of TV signals in Canada, there is no obligation to pay anything for a signal that spills over.

so to all you Canadians out there, is it legal?? And just how many channels does a DirectTV dish owner get anyhow? I've heard over 500...is this true??!

My 2 cents.

It doesn't matter if it's legal or not.

It is "not illegal" for now as long as you just set it up for you own purpose. There are enough criminals out there before they can have any budget to do anything against individual TV hobbiests.

If you got into the business, it's another matter. They can make it very complicated enough to stop your business for a while. However, just look in the classfied section in the papers. You will not find a single Extacy dealer in there, but a bunch of DSS dealer all the time with phone number.

About 500 channels, Dave is about 200. And the number really doesn't matter if it is over 100 and you can view PPV. They count all the music and sports channels to blow up the figure.

Hi Joe2002,

Right now it is CRYSTAL CLEAR that DirecTV® is not illegal in Canada whether you pay for it or NOT. Please look at the multiple court rulings which show that is NOT now and NEVER has been illegal in Canada at

http://www.legal-rights.org/index.html

Unfortunately the site is down right at THIS moment but It will be back up soon and may be when you read this.

I would advise ALL CANADIANS however that for a strange reason it is NOT LEGAL to use a receiver to receive the Echo (Dish network) signal as a HACK. Buy it grey market, NO PROBLEM but do NOT hack it. NOT because of the signal itself but rather because the equipment COULD decode Bell ExpressVu too as many know.

Many will want to argue with me but I stand firmly that equipment that COULD BE USED to decode bell ExpressVu in Canada IS ILLEGAL and if you do not believe me then READ sections 9 2 (C) and 10 1 (B) of the Radiocommunications Act on the Legal Rights.org website.

You have asked, I have told and then YOU decide what to do or whether to believe me or nothttp://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif

Its your perfect right.

as the puke=expressvu and choice-not=starchoice
are our legal dth providers
they are covered under all of the telco/rc acts
and are provided protection there-of
as to
dtv=driect tv they ARE not covered
reason is simple they have no BROADCASTING RIGHTS IN CANADA
the grey to this matter is NAGRA-VISION
reason is because puke could argue a case point here
SAME BASED SYSTEM so to this point i agree with
the above statments stay grey in nagra-vision
go whole hog with your cracking in dtv

Hi BillyH11,

You might well be able to but as the laws are different it could prove expensive to test it. One thing you could do is call the FCC and ask and if they say it is legal ask for confirmation in WRITING.

Certainly the pukes do sell lots of systems in the US to ex-Canadians and people who cannot get the networks due to their location. Canadian systems both get all the Networks because virtually none of us get them over the air (almost).

I cannot see WHY it would be any more illegal for Star Choice but if the law is CLOSE to ours then you could NOT get (hack) ExpressVu with the very common hack due to Echo (dish network) but you could probably get it if you pay and as the Star Choice signal is NOT hacked, I suspect that would be fine in the USA too. We call this "reverse grey market" and believe me the PUKES do it KNOWINGLY whether it is illegal or not. A good Communications lawyer could advise you and I am ONLY expressing my opinion as it cost me $250,000.00 so far to know Canadian law well and I have no desire to pay to understand US lawhttp://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif

But usually our laws are very similar so it may well be possible to pursue the inverse of what we do legally with DTV. But remember that these battles were won a very great cost to several individuals as COURT RULINGS are the ONLY thing that can settle contentious issues.
