I don't know much about the topic but just a thought would it be legal to decode and watch expressvu content in the states under the same situation that it is legal to decode and watch directv content in canada? just wondering.

Much of what's available on U.S. DBS is also available on B.E.V. Where they really differ is in sports, porn, and the availability of Canuck programming and news. Additionally, a number of U.S. HD early adopters have gray-market sub'd to B.E.V. because it provides the U.S. HD network feeds that neither U.S. provider does. That is supposed to change this fall with Dish Network's announced plans to carry the CBS primetime HD lineup. While B.E.V. contracts with Echostar for the equipment, reception of B.E.V. HAS to be with Canadian designated hardware. Neither the U.S. card nor the U.S. serially numbered boxes will decrypt the Canuck signal. To my knowledge no U.S. judge has issued a ruling declaring that Canadian DBS is "public domain". To my knowledge, though, there have been no prosecutions of U.S. citizens receiving and decrypting Canadian DBS, either. But, that could always change if the practice becomes more widespread and Charlie Ergen, majority stockholder and CEO of Dish Network and its parent company, Echostar, feels his bottom line's being threatened.[Edited by seymour_teevee on July 30th, 2001 at 05:31 PM]

ExpressPuke's hardware is alomost indentical to Dish.. parts are all the same and remote controls are interchangeable.. Pukes have different serial numbers with a different access card.. technology is provided by Nagra who provides Dish.
The reception of US or Foreign signals that is being challenged in the Supreme Court of Canada might some day have an influenced in the US in regards to receiving Canadian signals if ever challenged.

cool thanks guys, if they do the dish thing, wouldn't it be fairly easy to just reprogram the tssop with a bev number/image, thus enabling the box once again to recieve bev? gunsmoke i really didn't think the programming was too bad, i think the canadian commercials are funny, the porn is better than daves, they have the space channel which imho beats the scifi channel hands down, the only thing i see lacking is the ppv's are fewer and come out a little after daves, and of course no local locals. thanks for the info.

If it was so good then why did they have to start the Satellite wars ? kill the competition ? why can't they just accept people want the right to decide for themselves what they watch..
Their programming has some advantages so again why the RCMP raids ( 30 + ) across Canada and the good awful Atton Pillar orders and their multi Million doLlar lawsuits ?
Does that sound right to you ?

gs2 where i c what you are saying.
ie the tech is the same, its is now a known fact that
dishnetwork went out of there way to sperate the {2}
different but same systems
ie the same hardware/and/card-system
but thats where it ends.right there
the software needed for dish-network{the mask}
is different then used on mc-puke=express-vu
i will futher point you to the dif's
in the cam # ie 288-10 for dish
288-11 for puke
now the problem that is at hand is simple,
IS it illegal in the u.s.a for them to hack us??
just as we have done them ..
the q's begged to be asked and need to be answered
we here in canada went one long haul of a road and i will add it's not over yet to prove in our telco act it's crystal clear if you are not a legal BROADCASTER
IN CANADA YOU ARE NOT AFFORID THE LEGAL RECOURSE OF THE LAW
another q thats begged to be answered is why is there
bell-express-vu re-seller's in the u.s.a
yet another q begged to be answered is why is
bell-express-vu SPOT-BEAMING INTO FLORIDA??
one would have to go wtf to that but i will add if your a legit sub which i think you would be :) then how do you get ppv's
WHEN YOU NEED A PHONE-LINE ATTACHED???
neats q's eh
they all begged to be answerend
and i hope one of our fellow americain bothers will help to get to bottom of it
my 2%

I wouldnt want to be the test case to find out... :)
GS2 makes an important point about the hardware being almost identical to Dishnet/Echo. Sort of a 'too close for comfort' thing for me, although it could be quite popular.... especially for the snowbirds in FL.

Hi Guys,
For the many French speaking people in Florida, the highly used BEV hack is extremely popular and just about the only way they can get French Canadian TV. For others, I cant see the point.
Down there just about everyone has one and then the use it in Canada for the other 11 months of the year. BEV must be getting lots of cancellations up in Canada.
The one problem that I see for the BEV hack in the USA might be the same risk in reverse as people hacking Dish network in Canada and that is that they are almost identical systems with identical hacks.
If you go to court then an expert could say that a BEV system in the USA COULD decode the Dish Network signal making it illegal.
The laws don't say they have to catch anyone actually doing something, only that they found a device that COULD do it.
The fact that the DirecTV® system really CANNOT be used to hack a lawful distributor in Canada went a long way towards the vast raft of acquittals in Canadian courts. This equipment could ONLY be used to hack DirecTV® which was and is NOT against the LAW.
As DirecTV® cannot sell here and thus cannot lawfully charge for their signal, then that signal has no value and cannot be stolen. And the equipment cannot decode anything else.
The same CANNOT be said of either the ECHO (Dish Network) hardware in Canada or the BEV equipment in the USA. Both would generally be considered illegal in a court. Perhaps those who want the networks.
Of course that does not stop the many, many thousands of people hacking BEV in Canada even though it is illegal.
What I cant figure out is who would WANT to hack it but to each his ownhttp://www.legal-rights.org/images/ttrk.gif

ExpressPuke terminated Can-Am dealership for show purposes and for the court as they were doing a grey market in the US.. otherwize they couldn't care less and they don't even pursue piracy in Canada on their system
Very disgusting

gee - didn't realize i would open up a can of worms, i think i would be fairly save, i am using an avr to recieve bev, and to my knowledge you must have a card to recieve dish, so no card = legal maybe? i guess I just got tired of daves programming is why I like bev, or maybe i'm a cannuck at heart?
