Quick computer question

My computer came installed with windows 2000, I liked it so much I installed it on our accountants pc (used the same license number) The next morning I got a call from Microsoft, asking to update their database about my company. It was probably just a coincidence, but I am wondering if the OS automatically registers itself or something via the internet. Any comments would be greatly apprecitated.

I know they have some new security features in XP, but I am curious about this question, so..... UP.

I have been told that the security features can be turned off, but for the life of me I can not find where to shut them off!
