Quad I would have to agree Seth Enslow is nuts but Mad Mike Jones is crazier. Throw in Mike Metzger and Cary Hart with his back flip and they can hold there own. But as far a being able to do just about any trick and do it better than any one else. I have to go with the boy wonder Travis Pastrana.
Can't wait taking my son to see the free style comp. at the X games in Philly on Friday. Will see all the freestylers there.

Robby Knievel???? Uh.........NOT
Travis rocks, but I was thinking distance. I took Pup to see the freestyle when it rolled through.....awsome......but for distance.... I still say it is Seth, he WILL break the record, I guess they got his face back on ok! I guess Johnny Danger or whatever his name is has the record right now, what is his damn name??
Robby Knievel??? Uh..........NOT (sorry, needed repeating!)

I think it depends on the style of jumping. If you are talking huge air and distance, then it has to be seth. If you are talking about tricks then my vote is for carey hart or travis pastrana. They both rock. Has anyone seen seth the hard way? If you have then you know what I mean about seth. So are you guys fellow dirt bike riders an dif so what do you ride? I've got a cr250.

Hey, Don't get us wrong, Evel started it all, but his reign is over, and NOT taken over by his boy. Why would anyone want to jump a harley these days?? Thats just plain dumb. I would like some more info on this Renie fellow, if you have a link, please post it. I love all facets of motorsports, and I definately give Evel his due, but....... all things progress, and harleys don't jump well, the name of the game is distance for these guys (freestyle not included) I think I would like to be on a machine suited for the stunt, not an antique, (nothing against harleys, I think every Yuppie outta have one)
Long live technology!
LOL, that outta get something started!

By the way, the longest I have jumped my quad is 48 feet and that felt like a mile, I think I'll let the young guys have at it!!!

Talk about a generation gap here it is.
There isn't anybody out there who could shine his shoes on there best day and his worst.
And that includes JR. I saw him in Pa back in the 60"s with a broken leg in cast doing wheels up and down the track and said he was sorry he couldn't do the jump that he was schedule to do.
Who else broke more bones and kept coming back.
And this was before they had the high tec bikes and equipment.

Well, there was this 18" culvert that just happened to catch my rear tire as I was walking the bike. Heck, I had a crowd and they were liking what I was doing, but the culvert made them love my head over-the-bars crash. I am not afraid to call it like I see it. That is total BULL----, hell, Seth has broken more bones than Evel ever did, so what he didn't have the equipment, so what, I saw Evel jump in the late 60's, so freakin what, He is the king of OLDTIME jumping, I'll give him that, but when seth screwed up a practice jump and SMASHED his face, (almost landed a 230+ footer after OVERSHOOTING THE RAMP, in essence a 230 foot ramp to GROUND jump. and he was back jumping 6 weeks later, they had to REMOVE his whole face to repair the damage!!! The reason Evel broke so many bones is the fact that he jumped on CRAP motorcycles, does that make him the greatest or the dumbest??? I have been into watching Evel my whole life, and he used to be my HERO, BEFORE I read about what an ass he was. And Robbie, don't get me started. The young guns these days are so far beyond Evel, gutwise, talent wise, injury wise, and skillwise. Folks that hold onto "Old School" heros are simply deluding themselves, so cling to your beliefs all you want. Evel is like Elvis, he started something good, but guess what? HE IS OVER AND DONE WITH. Lets let the new talent excel without holding them to stupid, ignorant yardsticks like, "let them try it on a Harley!" Why in the hell would they want to?? They want to jump far! not kill themselves, the fact that Evel jumped on a piece of crap doesn't make him a hero, it makes him a stubborn stick in the mud, and it doesn't prove anything except the fact that he didn't have any damn sense, Uh.....how about Snake River canyon, what a damn joke.
I have been looking into this Rennie fellow, and I will be keeping my eye on him for sure, the simple fact is, so many new riders are so much better than Evel ever was it isn't funny, I give Evel credit for what he did, but his accomplishments are so outdone by these new kids, it is hard to comprehend. They are jumping twice his average distances, that old man wouldv'e crapped his pants even looking at the ramp for a 250 foot jump! No matter what bike was available. These kids get completely off their bikes, stand on their heads, kiss the front fender, land with no hands, you name it. get real! The sport has advanced way past Evel's accomplishments, although I know nothing I can say will convince you, I have to have my say.
This is just my opinon, but you asked for it. No hard feelings if you want to hold on to the past and make it seem larger than life. And Oh yeah, I rode Harleys for years and even enforced for a local club, I am not talking out of my ass here, I have lived almost all facets of the motorcycle life, I am 40 years old this year, I ain't no newbie!
just my 2 cents.

It's not jumping but a very good friend of mine has ridden in the Black water 100 a few times and one year he came in 4th in his class. I have had 23 different fractures from different activities, 19 of the motorcycle accidents. My worst wreck happened when I took my Yamaha YZ250 off a jump crooked and hit a telephone pole with my shoulder. Collar bones look funny when they stick through the skin. Boy, do I miss those days. The XR750 was and is a great Flat track bike, never meant for jumping, Evel did write the book, without a doubt, but to say that some of the talented young guns couldn't shine his shoes is just plain wrong. Birdhouse and I have talked since and had a laugh. I NEVER pull punches with my opinions, If you reread my posts, I always gave Evel credit for what he accomplished, All I did was tell it like I saw it, Some of todays riders would not have a bit of trouble duplicating what Evel did. That is just common sense.
The reason I don't like Evel as a person is a completely different story. I have read some things that may or may not have been true, but it colored my opinion of the man. Evel didn't have much nice to say about most things, period, he seemed to be full of himself. His obsession with several of his stunts caused great emotional pain to people that loved him, he just wasn't the happy go lucky, crazy, fun loving fellow that MOST of the current crop of daredevils are. Hey, its just my opinon, and you know how that is. I hold no grudges or hard feelings, but I will not personally accept Evel as the Greatest jumper of all time, you are free to if you want, makes no difference to me. I will never for the sake of peace and quiet, deny my convictions or beliefs, (but I am always willing to listen to reason)
Great thread, thanks guys!

Yeah, I'll agree with that, but I will go you one further, I bet any of the above could jump an XR750 150 feet ramp to ramp too. And I'll also bet the Evel couldn't have even dreamed about doing a "hart attack" or a no hander lander.

I used to feel that way, and I do want another, (I have had many Harleys, used and brand new) BUT..... I love rice burners, fast, economical, they LAST and HOLD TOGETHER.
They are just way better engineered. I will take my Goldwing over just about any Harley these days. I would like to have another ultraclassic, but If I were given a heritage I would trade it for a new Goldwing. It's not that I don't like them, its just that I like the Rice better these days. MUCH more variety out there, almost all the hogs are the same ole same ole. Seen it, done it, built it, rode it, fought it, cussed it, OVER IT!!!
I know several Pagans, (as well as many other "others") some still have me work on their bikes (not the Pagans) As far as Sportsters?? No offense, but they are too heavy to be good dirt bikes and I can't find knobbies for them anyway (actually I can, LOL) And as far as me riding another Sportster (first bike I ever had was the last sportser I'll ever have) not much danger of that. If I build myself another bike, it might look like a Harley, but it won't have one single harley part on it. I am against the factory more than the actual bikes, they are just -------s up there in Milwaukee!! That, and, with all the damn tennishoed, short wearing dentists and lawyers riding new hogs these days, screw it, I'm over it.
I saw a stupid guy pulling out of a gas station the other day, he had on shorts, tennis shoes, no socks, on a Heritage (nice looking bike damnitol) He had a GOLF BAG, slung over his shoulder!!! TRYING TO BALANCE THE GOLF BAG!!! He almost dropped the damn thing at the turn! I was willing it to fall, you can bet!! I rolled down the window and called him a stupid f'ing idiot, and told him to get the hell off the road before I called the cops. I went in and there were several people in there laughing their asses off, they had heard me, and it turns out that it was an off duty SHERIFF!!! I couldn't believe it! I jumped in my truck and tried to catch him, I was going to actually pull him over and arrest him myself, till the local cops could get there. I couldn't find him quickly enough, and came to my senses about 3 miles later. damn I was mad. A COP!!! He didn't have a lick of sense. Nope, No thanks, If I get another, it sure as hell will be built with my own two hands again, or maybe I'll get an "antique" pan or something, even a RAT bike, I WILL NOT BE ASSOCIATED with these idiots! (present company excluded) I ain't calling anyone here names, I am just on a rant! Hell I used to have a Bike shop!!! Harley only!!!! Go over to PhotoGenies site and see the harley and custom post for pics of some of the bikes I built. I am the Motorcycle moderator over there.
OK, I'm done, you harley guys can flame me now, I don't care, cause I have reasons you will never know or understand, I have been there and lived it and done almost everthing associated with hogs, rice and almost everything inbetween, I ain't just talking out my butt here.

I know Harley's used to have there problems (mechanicly) but that is pretty much a thing of the past. The new fuel injected, cam balanced engines are awesome. I wouldn't even attempt to make a sportster into a dirt bike. LOL For that I like my Husky and YZ.
Don't ride the sportster too much any more but that little bike has taken me to Myrtle Beach 4 times, Sturgis once, Daytona 3 times, has 56,000 miles on it and never a mechanical problem with it, minus 2 voltage regulators.
I totally agree with you with that there are too many idiots out there on bikes. But on all types of bikes not just Harleys. Plus Harleys are a little more pricey, well alot more pricey that some of the others. But I have been riding Harleys for 17 years now and have no intention of my ASS EVER sitting on a Jap street bike. Even stuck with them thru those terrible AMF years. But that is what makes this country so great. Everyone can make thier own decisions and opinions on these things.
Don't know much about the factory in Milwaukee, or what you have against them but the factory in York, Pa is cool with me. Matter of fact going back out there in Sept. for the HOG rally.
Peace

There's no right or wrong answer to this question, as an ex stuntman, I'll throw in what knowledge I have because it's a great thread. As far as my credibility goes, anyone old enough to have a 1989 Guinness book of records, turn to page 259, there's a quarter page photo of me breaking the record for the longest car jump in a car, 200ft, or, over 60 cars.
Evel Kneivel, coined his own stage name whilst in prison, his cellmates name was Awful Knawful.
Evel holds one world record, (assuming we agree that only "guinness" records count) That's "most bones broken by a living human being"
In the 80's, my Team was scheduled for a 4 week engagement with Evel at Wembley Stadium (London), on the first night, Evel rode down the roof of the Stadium, straight of the front and fell about 60 ft, smashing his hips and jaw, and spent 2 months in Hospital.
Robbie Knievel, whether you like his stunts or not, is probably the greatest motorcycle "Showman" there is, as he gives the paying customers, exactly what they paid for.
Having said that, if we're talking about just the jump, Mcgrath and Seth are both absolutely untouchable at what they do.
Another honourable mention has to go to Eddie Kidd, the British stunt rider that jumped every weekend for years at shows all over europe, till one crippled him, (and his girl dumped him immediately, bitch)
Personally, I have the most admiration for the late dar Robinson.
Dar's stunts included diving off the top of the Capitol Records building in Los Angeles, leaping from a helicopter hovering at three hundred feet to land in an airbag, and driving a car off the rim of the Grand Canyon, whereupon he climbed out in mid-air and pulled his parachute.
For one of his stunts, Dar had to run full tilt forward, spin around backward, crash through a glass window, fall sixteen stories, and then do a somersault with a half twist, before dropping into an airbag. Any miscalculation or mistake would have cost him his life.
He also jumped in tons of movies, doubled for Burt Reynolds and Steve Mcqueen (who, incidentally raced motorcycles competitively his whole life using a false name) and rode a dirt bike up the stairwell to the top of the CNN tower, which he also parachuted from and descended (absailed) from on separate occasions. Tragically Dar died on the way home from work in a street collision.
Hope that wasn't too lengthy, also anyone interested in learning to roadrace, in South Florida, e-mail me, there's a school in Daytona in October.
"See ya on the road Bronze..." Mad Max

Yep, there comes some of the truth about Evel. nuff said about that.
Dar Robinson (Rest his soul) WAS the best stuntman ever in my book. I am not going to continue.
Thanks for posting, I needed some backing on this, although I don't give mcgrath much credit for anything except his racing reign, which is OVER, Long live Ricky C!!!!
And we had ALL keep our eyes on Travis P. cause he is going to absolutely dominate the 250 class when he moves up, well its at least going to be a great compititon with Ricky!! Oh we live in great times!!!!

YZ huh?? what does that burn? Uh.....Rice LOL, I guess everybody has to draw their lines somewhere.
As far as the modern harley having no problems, to this I reply, have you ever worked in a Harley shop??? Well, I have and they have plenty of shortcomings, especially if they are not babied, I don't baby anything! They used to have the same parts year after year, but now, they switch constantly! Why, because the parts keep breaking. I guess I am exaggerating, but hey. We too can agree to disagree, and If I see you out on your heritage, and I am on my goldwing, look quick, I blow by Hogs, so fast that they can't tell what I am on! I can't see paying $15k + for someting that damn slow. and my Goldwing is 17 years old! and shaft and quiet and....and....and.....and.....
And goldwings are built right here in Ohio, and Harleys are FULL of japanese, and Korean parts, its all in the mind my friend. If harley would build a V-four, I would give it a chance, I would NEVER own a Rice harley clone, never, that is way worse than a hog! If you want a v-twin cruiser, at least get a Hog! As far as Rice, I like goldwings and ALL the jap sportbikes, but would really love a BMW or Ducati.
I do ride an American made Polaris too, as a matter of fact ALL my rides are made in america, so you can't hit me from that angle.. Like I said, different strokes, different folks. LOL,, take it easy man! I like you.

1st off Robbie Kneivel is a joke. Just my opinion though. Mcgrath was a awesome motocrosser but no jumper. Have you ever seen Steel Roots II? His attempt at doing freestyle and jumping. Nothing spectactular, just all Nac Nacs.
Quad, that sounds like a challange. I'll put my Heritage against your Ricewing anyday. I love eating rice. LOL :D Quiet? NO WAY. The louder the better. Dude you have to admit there is nothing like rolling with a pack of Harleys. My club (The Road Crew) went out to Pittsburgh, for the Thunder in the Cascades rally in June. 25 of us rolling up the turnpike. Gives me goose bumps. There is nothing like it.
Harley is coming out with a new bike this year 2002. It's called the V-rod. Ugly as hell, but fast. It's liquid cooled, 115 horsepower 1130cc, fuel injected, four-valve heads and 9000 rpm redline. Could be promising if you need speed.
As far as my YZ I don't mind burning a little rice in the dirt, just don't like leaving the rice trail all over the streets. LOL
But when it comes down to it I'll ride with anyone no matter what they are on, just because I love to ride. I won't hold it against anyone if they have ----ty taste in bikes. Later. Stay cool.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
115 horsepower!!! A honda CBR 600 puts that more than that (BY FAR)
I just can't understand why they won't make a "performance" bike.
I will back up a bit and say that riding with a pack is a cool feeling. But I am sick of the sound, I once rode a harley from Cincinnati Ohio to San Diego CAli, and it was just too damn annoying. I have ridden my Harley all over this country with the exception of Pacific Northwest (I did go to Sturgis once for the 50th) and New england, they are definately on my list, but I will be on my Goldwing.

If I get a real long running start at it, I can jump over my motorcycle! I'm pretty good at it too..... Oh, wait a minute, you mean jumping a motorcycle over something. Nevermind.

Not the greatest ever BUT this guy was something to see. He is from central Indiana. His name is Rodger Rydell and he calls himself MISTER BACKWARDS. The first time I heard of him he was hillclimbing a 40 inch Triumph,(650cc), sitting backwards on the seat looking over his shoulder. He would show up at flattrack motorcycle races and ride backwards around the track for entertainment during breaks which were usually due to having only one ambulance and having to wait for it to get back from its runs to the hospital. He would do these demos just to advertise for any upcoming hillclimbs. This was in the middle 60s. Later he began jumping cars and trucks riding his same 40 incher. I saw him jump seven mustangs at the Marion county fair in the middle 70s. He jumped ramp to Grass, no down ramp, and he didn't bust his ass, I couldn't beleive it. He landed so hard that his face and helmet came down on the back fender and dented it pretty bad. Both rear shocks were bent and stuck fully compressed, and he never let go of the handle bars, an absolute miracle. The next time I saw him was at an AMA indoor short track in MARKET SQUARE ARENA at Indianapolis. He was going to jump seven or eight mustangs again but this was indoors. It would be ramp to ramp this time but the ends of the ramps were pretty close to the ends of the arena. There were small gates at each end where the zamboni came in and out of the floor area during hockey games and that is where he had to enter before the jump and exit after the jump. Now I was certain that he wouldn't have any trouble coming into the arena at speed but the exit was an entirely differant matter. When and if he hit the down ramp he would have no chance to slow down to any degree. Now as a kid I tryed riding my bicycle a time or two sitting on it backwards and The crashes were real bad. I was sitting there thinking, well at least you can say you saw it happen. After all the prelims were over he dissapeared through the gate and I could hear the motor. He shifted gears twice and came flying through the gate, up the ramp, over the mustangs, down the down ramp and out the gate at the other end. He absolutly zeroed it. Hard to beleive but true. Why he never got the notariety that Evil and some of the other dare devils have gotten I don't know but I won't forget the times I saw him in action...I think he performed at a hillclimb this summer at a ski lodge between Nashville Indiana and Bloomington Indiana. That's nearly 40 years. NOT BAD for a hoosier.

Let me ask you this...... Does this X-game thing count?
I know zero about 2 wheelers, but that part where those dudes go about 60 - 70 feet in the air, that's pretty cool.
What's harder........flat out flying or that moto "Superman thang".......
Just checking.

yeah, the folks some of us were mentioning are the "x-game" type jumpers you are talking about. Seth, Travis, Mike Metzger, Deegan, Carey Hart, Clifford Adoptante, Tommy Clowers, Ronnie Faist, Twitch, all those guys and more...
These guys are supermen in my book, Carey Hart did a backflip, (although he didn't stick the landing) in the summer X games (2000) I don't know if he has tried it again or not. A BACKFLIP!!!! Evel and Robbie aren't fit to stand in the same stadium as these guys. oooops, I didn't mean to start it again, I am in a way bad mood. But if you haven't seen the exploits of these guys, you need to go get a video, Crusty Demons of Dirt, and that one is tame, there are better, Moto XXX I, II, III, IV, Seth the Hard way (EXCELLENT) Revelation 199 (Travis, a Phenom!) Even Goodtimes with Carey Hart is a good one. Just avoid "steel roots" Mcgrath WAS a great racer, but a world class jumper, he'll never be! If you get Crusty, (I, II, III, Millenium) Think of me as the "Bubba" type! HEY, I could be Bubba~! That is if I could find a Seth, and that is doubtful.
The skill and guts of these guys surpasses anything I have EVER seen and I have seen plenty!
Enough, enough......

Digitydash is right Carey Hart attempted another back flip yesterday at the X-games during the big air contest. Broken wrist and ribs. Even though he didn't land this one it was still great to see him attempt it in person. Freakin unbelieveable.
Quad he did land the back flip last year when the X games were in Frisco. OH and by the way yes I have had my Heritage up to 120 mph before. I'll eat that Goldwing for lunch!!! Just teasing dude. It was actually 110 mph and mine is stock too. No engine work done to it yet. Peace.

Teetas.....he he, no hard feelings man, sorry about your limited top speeds. LOL....still just kidding. Speed ain't everything, (I keep telling myself that!!)
I wish I could've seen the backflip attempt, I am sure I will see the replays! He will get it, if that last attempt doesn't scare him away, WILD STUFF.
