Hi, I am a newbie in the sat. world
I am building a new house, and i am running all my own coax cable(RG6)
I know that the general rule of thumb is to have 2 receivers to get different channels in 2 rooms. I am running coax to all rooms in my house, and want to know if and what i can do to get Directv programming in all rooms of the house? will a splitter provide this for me or what? any help on this and how i should do the cabling would really appreciated.
Thanks!

And a dual LNB on your dish.

thanks for the reply
i was looking about the multiswitch, but correct me if i am wrong, thats if i have multiple receivers right?
what i am trying to do is use one or 2 receivers, and disperse it to all locations. i found a 3x8 bi-directional video module that does this by Leviton, but you also have to buy there modulator to go with it to get audio. its an additional $350...i am looking for a cheaper route

You will need a 4X4 or 4X8 multiswitch, centralized with the output feeds going to each room. You will also need an IRD at each of these rooms.
Good Luck!!

One other thing you might want to consider, rather than a separate receiver in each room. You can have a receiver in one room and direct the feed from that receiver to 1 or 2 other rooms. You might get away with 3 receivers in a house with 8 tvs. The trick is planning which 2 or 3 rooms won't have their tv's in use at the same time (cuz those rooms will have to watch the same channel). You would want to use receivers with UHF remote capabilities (programmable to different frequencies) - then you can control the receiver from anywhere in the house regardless of line of sight.
I've got 3 receivers feeding 6 tv's and no conflicts yet.

well that sounds pretty good
i think i will go with 2 receivers, and wire all 8 rooms for it...i just bought that 3x8 splitter and in the future, i may go ahead and muy the modulator, which will give me all 8 rooms off one receiver..but with 2 receivers to start i can feed about 4 tv's so i should be fine, until i can break down and buy the modulator.
thanks for the input

My house is currently wired for cable would it be possible to use that cable to hookup a receiver to be shared or a satilette signal to be shared?? My cable tv is currently disconnected

coon343, if the cable is RG6, not the older RG56 you should be fine.
mailfire, the Multiswtch should only cost $50-100 depending on if it's a 4 or 8 out. I have this setup running 3 IRD's off one Dual LNB dish and it works fine, cable runs of up to 100ft as well with no extra power to the multiswitch.... Hope that helps

RG6 is critical from the dish to the receiver, but from the receiver to the tv, I think you can get away with pretty much any coax.

Mat Electronic's has a RCA 4 way multiswitch for under $20., part number MS-34, they also have a limited quantities of the RCA dual LNB for the same price, part number 221044.

Since you doing new house.....PLAN your Cable runs carefully. Personally, I just EMUlate at 5 locations, IRD & EMU setups, the total package. Now that's a bit for some to phantom, but hey, what the hell, this is a fun Hobby.
If you are running to that many TV's, then add the Surround packages to.
It's a pretty big investment in the beginning, but I am damn sure you will enjoy each TV on it's one Channel and you can have the Sound effects too.
Remember, it's a New House. Go in with a bang.
If you need any help on the wiring, PM me.

Mat Electronic's, is this a local store? Does it have a website where you can place an order? Could you email me, pcao@rocketmail.com, if it's an internet site? Thanks.

If you intend to drive eight outputs from a passive splitter (from the "RF/TV out" connector of an IRD/receiver), you should put an amplifier between the IRD and the splitter. Something on the order of +12db should work fine.
An un-amplified eight-way split is insane.
If you still have the option, put two RG/6 runs to each location. It expands your future options considerably. If you don't think you'll need it, pull two, terminate one, leave the other inthe wall "just in case." The cable is not going to add much to the expense, most of the cost is in the labor.
If you decide to do this, make the cables different colors (black, white, blue, grey...whatever), it'll make figuring out which-is-which much easier when you get around to hokking things up.
