Does anyone know of a dealer who is selling sony hd units in Canada, or an american company that will ship here? I am in the market for a hd receiver, but am not having much luck finding one.

Winger,
Look at this thread at the AVS forum. Maybe you'd be lucky.Looks like Vidoeonly will ship out of state w/ no activation.

That AVS forum is a great forum. I got a ton of usefull info, and completely changed my thoughts on which receiver to buy after reading lots there, as well as other sites. I found a place to order from, and should be receiving it next monday, Depending on delivery speed across the border, which is probably slow right now.

Just an update, I received the Toshiba unit and elliptical dish on Friday, and installed it yesterday. Wow! is all I can say. After using for a day or 2 now, The only thing I wish was different was the card slot, On my sony it was in the back, this is on the front, so you can see emu card hanging out. But Picture is amazing! Can't wait for Band of Brothers tonight!

Read the above link to the avs forum, it has become a favorite forum of mine since wease posted it. I purchased from Video Only dot com, a Seattle area store. No activation needed. $450 us for the Toshiba unit. I was going to purchase Sony but have only heard negative things about it. The Toshiba is basically half price. The People that say "Why spend that much on a hd unit when there are only a couple of channels and a few network shows broadcasting in HD?" Say that because they have never seen it. It is worth every penny.

The Winger,

Other then the $450 US how, what was the total? How much duty did you have to pay? I am located in Toronto. Where did you buy the elliptical dish?

Do you think they could repackage the receiver as "Repaired" or something?

Thanks

Jblue, I purchased the elliptical dish from them as well, 139 us included multiswitch and 2 dual lnbs. I shipped using fedex overnight, and was only billed for delivery, nothing else. If you ship by ground you will have to pay that stuff plus probably some kind of brokerage fee. I called fedex and arranged for the pickup myself.

Is it possible to use emulator on that Toshiba unit ?

YEs, you can emulate with the Tosh STB. You would need an HU cam and ZKT on the cor file. As for what Winger said about people saying the HD STB's are not worth it, THAT'S A BUNCH OF SH*T. LAtely, every night there has been more than 1 HD program to watch at one time, between HD on Direct or HD on OTA. IT is SOOOOOO worth the money.

I've seen HDTV demo and I also think it's worth the money ! What is the model number for Toshiba receiver I sould be asking for? Do I have to mod it ?

Thanks

The Tosh model # is DST-3000 for their HD STB. To emulate you will not have to do any mods on the receiver. When I emulate my DTC-100 watching an HD channel, sometimes the picture freezes for a second but only on the HD channel when emulating. When I use a HU test card there is no freezing. When I use a BS H w/BL it also freezes occationally, once again only on the HD channels. Weird??

Teapot, everything wease has said is true. I am emulating, no problems and no freezing. NO mods. It is an excellent unit. Worth every penny, wait until you see it!

Winger, I called videoonly.com (1-st phone on their web site) and they said that they will not ship to Canada "because DTV is not allowed there". Also they are not accepted order via credit card . Which particaly store you have ordered from and how did you pay for that? Please, help, I want to buy this unit !
Thanks
