I tell ya, I have not returned the new Sony HD100 because of things that came up. The more I use this receiver the more I cannot stand it. The picture in HD looks better than it did with my old DTC-100 though. That may be attributed to the fact that I have a Toshiba TV and in order to use the DTC with it I have to use the convertor to component inputs. The receiver is extremly slow on channel changes. Almost 4 times longer than the so called out dated DTC. Their is no display banner that both my former RCA and Hughes units had when you changed channels. That at least shows you what show you just turned on while waiting for the channel to be displayed. The RCA also had simple menu icons located within the disply bar for easy access with out having to go through all the menu BS. The other thing that I really find annoying is the guide on the Sony. On the Hughes and RCA units you can go through the guide without changing channels. Is that not the purpose of the guide to surf without surfing. Well when you go to the guide with the Sony and say see whats on at 8 P.M. on channel 230 it actually turns to that channel in the little preview window in the corner of the screen. If you hit exit and not enter it goes to the channel you were on in the guide which sucks!!!! This is the most overpriced POS that I have yet to encounter. I will take the user friendly not rushed design of the outdated, first generation DTC-100 over this so called technical marval Sony. Its the little things that make or break a product and thats the case with this Sony. To many little problems that make the nice design undesirable.
I almost forgot. Even though the new Sony with the new chipset has all channels(OTA, Cable, Sat) located within within 1 antennae sort of speak, its does not receive both analog and digital OTA if you also feed Cable into it. The Rca you need to switch between antennae A(Cable), antennae B(OTA both analog and Digital), and Sat. It may not be as friendly cause you have to select the ant, but the RCA ant menu located within the channel display makes it a snap. The Rca actually can detect more signals for less monies, like 300 bucks less!!!!!

Like my Panasonic TU-HDS20. It does the stuff your wanting, and I didn't need a converter box to use it with my Sony TV :)

Given the number of HD channels, as in, one really (o.k., oct 1 two on a selective basis) why even bother to upgrade HD receivers in the first place.
I mean, apart from HD 199 & 509, what other reasons would you want to upgrade or change the DTC100 (from what you had in the first place)
Just my 0.02 cents worth.

Because the software update that DTV sent down killed my unit and I cant go with NO HD material. DTV only has 1/2 channels, but I get several OTA channels locally. Since I am in dispute with RCA over the death of the DTC-100 and I vow to never buy another RCA product I looked at the Sony unit. It is a nice looking piece that is supposed to be the latest greatest out and it truely is worth less than the out dated DTC100. I guess I will wait for the new Zenith that is supposed to have the banner guide like the RCA as well as the ability to output both HD and SD singnal at the same time.

And I got my HD IRD now because I could buy it without subbing. When there are more channels I bet they are harder to buy:)

lisnup65,
You said RCA sent down an update that killed your DTC-100. I want to know if I stay away from RCA and get either Sony/Toshiba/Mits and I use a "Reprogrammed" (I think you know what I mean). Will RCA be able to ruin my HD STB in any way?
Thanks

Their is a chance that any DTC hooked to a dish can fail during upgrade. I guess that I am one of the fe unlucky ones that this happened to.The DTC is worth the lower cost compared to its competitors at almost twice the cost. Take out an extended warranty if available, just in case!!!

lisnup65,
My concern is that RCA will not honor the warrantee if I use a "reprogrammed" access card. I live in Canada also. If I get a Sony/Toshiba/Mits STB will the updates ONLY affect RCA DTC100?
Thanks

To start with, in the menu it lets you know when the updates are scheduled. You can simply unplug the receiver and their is no way the update will proceed or you could modify the receiver to not take the updates. I'm not 100% correct, but I hear that all new units are capable of data-stream upgrades. As far as the warranty goes, They do not know what you are using. If you did need warranty, just dont give the card with the unit.
