Threads say, HDTV receivers are overpriced. Is it true you can only get 2 to 3 digital stations right now? Would it be better to buy a basic receiver and card to learn to emulate and not worry about digital receivers for a year or so from now? It also sounds like more trouble programing with a digital receiver? Opinions anyone?
Thanks!

They are pretty much one in the same. If you are capable of emulating with a 5th gen, then, you will be able to emulate with a HDTV receiver as well.

You will need all the same type of skills and knowledge. Hence take your pick. But you are right and wrong. Yup, only one channel (HBO509) plus a demo/limited HDTV channel (199), but the picture is worth writing home about... you got to see it to believe it.

And they ain't gonna get cheaper or easier to buy as time goes by.

Invested in HDTV about 4 months ago. True, the picture is incredible but it is only two channels. I wish I had invested in 4 or 5 directivo's instead. I tune to HDnet about once to twice a month now.

Do you get HD local channels? I got some OTA HD locals, and they are even better than 509. If you don't, get an outside antena.

It's true that you only get 2 HD channels on Sat, but the local off-air channels are available as well. I get all my networks locally in Hi Def, although much of it is just rebroadcasting ntsc in 480i. But I am noticing more programing coming in 1080i. BTW, I am using the Sony hd100.

OTA digital is sweet and lets not forget the 1080i upconvert on normal directv shows.
