I have done two residential installs (my houses), and have never been able to get more than a 75 to 79 signal strength at either location. Both have a completely clear line of sight to the SW. What should I be able to get in Michigan, near Detroit?

Thanks for the answer Cellular.
Sometimes it almost seems like the reporters are in a p**ker
measuring contest and eveyone wants the biggest one. :)

To add to Cellular's post...signal strength will also be affected by cable length, number of connections (several chunks of coax connected with barrels have more drop than a single chunk), type of multi-switch, etc.

hi mikotron,i live in canada were the signal sucks the big one,i put up a 39inch starchoice and get 100% on transponder 7 and on the weekest transponders around 60%. you probley have an 18inch dish worse comes to worse though a 24 or 30 inch pan up on your exsisting bracket. it will increase your strenth, and work better in bad weather.they are really cheap to buy around here.

Check out the 46cm - 1.9m satellite antenna (dish) selection on the Stark Electronic web site.

Thanks for all of the replies. Rain fade was my major concern when I posed the question.
Thanks especially to Cellular for helping me to more fully understand the dish, IRD, and cableing relationship.

HI,
I am interested in setting up my Prime**** dish to get DirectTV. Please can you provide me as much info as possible as how to do this, I am in a fringed area, I already bought a LNB for the big dish, just want to know how to point or set it up, the pro and cons. You can email me at francjam@yahoo.com if you desire

I had a 93% signal with my 18" dish but got tired of rainouts. So I got a Prime**** dish, did the LNB mod and tried it. The highest signal I got was 96% but that was on most, if not all of the transponders. Next time I had heavy rain ( It poured ) The lowest my signal got on any transponder was 70%.
Ird was an RCA DS2121RD
I have seen different makes of ird's get different signal strengths on the same hookup.

That is not the dish I have. I have a Prime Focus type antenna and not the offset, same as on Starks Electronics website, the DS1912, 1.9 meter, 6.3 foot dish made by Wineguard.
