Echostar 1 was the first satellite to be launched in 1995 and provided core programming services at the 119° orbital location until it was relocated to 148° in 2000.

EchoStar III


Echostar 3, launched in 1997 was located at the half-CONUS 61.5° orbital slot servicing the Eastern United States. Echostar 3's capacity allowed the first local channels to be broadcast in the Eastern USA by Dish Network.

EchoStar IV

Echostar 4 was launched in 1998 and was scheduled to be placed at the half-CONUS 148° orbital slot to service the Western USA, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. However it was crippled by a number of on-board system failures including a solar panel deployment failure which limited its use to 6 out of 44 transponders and signifigantly cut short its life span. Echostar 4 has been re-located to the 157° slot and is currently dormant and used as an in-orbit spare in case of the loss of another Echostar satellite.
